# Does Medicare ever call you?

**Direct answer:** Medicare almost never calls you first. Medicare communicates by mail. The narrow exceptions are callbacks you requested, follow-ups on a claim you already filed, or your own Medicare Advantage or Part D plan contacting you as an existing member. Medicare will never call to ask for your Medicare number, sell you a plan or device, or threaten your coverage.

## When could a call actually be from Medicare?

- You called 1-800-MEDICARE and asked for a callback.
- You have an open claim, appeal, or application and a representative is following up on it.
- You are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, and that plan's member services contacts you about your existing coverage.
- A Medicare health-risk assessment you previously agreed to in writing.

Even in those cases, a legitimate representative already has your record. They may ask you to confirm limited details, but they will not need you to recite your full Medicare Beneficiary Identifier, and they will not object if you hang up and call back on the published number.

## What does Medicare never do on the phone?

1. Never asks for your Medicare number to 'verify' or 'reactivate' your account.
2. Never sells plans, braces, DNA kits, or supplies by cold call.
3. Never charges for a card or announces a new plastic or chip card.
4. Never threatens to cancel your benefits to force an immediate answer.
5. Never requests payment by gift card, wire, crypto, or a payment app.
6. Never sends someone to your home to inspect your card or equipment.

> **Two-minute verification**
>
> Say: 'I'll call Medicare directly.' Hang up, then dial 1-800-633-4227 from the number on your card or Medicare.gov. If the call was legitimate, the record will be there. If it was not, you have lost nothing.

## What if I already gave out my Medicare number?

1. Call 1-800-MEDICARE and report possible compromise; ask that your record be flagged.
2. Contact your state Senior Medicare Patrol for free help reviewing statements.
3. Check every Medicare Summary Notice for a year and question anything unfamiliar.
4. Report the call at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and if you also shared your Social Security number, freeze your credit.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Medicare call about Open Enrollment?

Medicare itself does not cold-call about Open Enrollment. Marketing calls during October through December come from brokers and plans, and federal marketing rules restrict unsolicited contact. Any Open Enrollment call demanding your Medicare number, offering a gift for switching, or claiming your current plan is ending should be treated as a scam and reported.

### Can caller ID show Medicare's real number?

Yes. Caller ID spoofing lets anyone display 1-800-633-4227 or a local office number. The display proves nothing. Judge the call by what is requested, and verify by hanging up and dialing Medicare yourself.

### Is it a scam if they know my Medicare plan name?

Not necessarily, but it is not proof of legitimacy either. Plan enrollment data circulates through brokers, marketing lists, and breaches. Verify by calling the member services number printed on your plan card rather than continuing with an inbound caller.
